Zoom In / Zoom Out
Feeding my need to occasionally hold a physical book, magazine or newspaper in my hands, I picked up an HBR Special Issue last week to read on a flight. It contained a compilation of nuggets from across the HBR years on strategy and leadership.
This one remains as true today as it did when written. The article clearly illustrates with real world stories the need for leaders to be able to shift between a bird's-eye view and a worm's-eye view as needed depending on the circumstances. Getting stuck at either extreme is fraught with risk. The great leaders of the world have an innate knack of knowing when to zoom out, and when to zoom in.
